UPMC Pinnacle Downtown Carlisle First Fridays

Summer is almost here and so the Downtown Carlisle First Fridays,
sponsored by UPMC Pinnacle.

Downtown Carlisle, PA – The Downtown Carlisle Association announced the UPMC Pinnacle Downtown First Friday series kicks off the summer with new themes and activities.

Scheduled on the first Friday of each month, except July, the Downtown Carlisle First Friday Series has been a staple of community fun and downtown dining & shopping for years.  Live music, food and beverage sampling, great downtown sales, children’s activities and art openings are just some of the fun in store in downtown.

Sponsored by community partner UPMC Pinnacle, the Downtown Carlisle First Friday Series starts on May 4th at 5 pm with an “AMANI FESTIVAL PREVIEW NIGHT.”  Co-hosted by the DCA and the Amani planning committee, this evening will play host to great entertainment celebrating Peace and love through understanding the common bonds of our diverse cultures.

Live music will start the evening with The Flat Wheels on the Square from 5:15 to 6:15 pm.  The Flat Wheels are a Folk Rock band born in the hills of Perry County, Pennsylvania. Their sound is derived from a melting pot of influences that is continually mixed by all five members of the band. Classic Country and Bluegrass blended with Contemporary Pub-Rock/Indie sounds take your ears for a ride through modern day Americana.

Followed by the Dickinson College’s Kappa Alpha Psi Step group from 6:30 pm to 7 pm. And then Hypnotic, Dickinson College’s Hip-Hop dance group will end at the Old Courthouse from 7 pm to 7:30 pm.

National touring artists SVIRAJ! will play 6:30 pm to 8:00 pmSVIRAJ! means Play on! and (pronounced svee-rye with a rolled “r”) is shouted in encouragement when a tamburitza musician is playing with special energy and inspiration. It’s also the name of one of the best known Slavic music bands in the United States. Childhood friends from Steelton, Pennsylvania, America’s tamburitza heartland, and descendants of immigrants from Croatia and Serbia, Sviraj epitomizes the camaraderie, passion, and deep-rooted connection to family, culture and community in tamburitza music.

Tamburitza is the great multi-ethnic instrumental and vocal music tradition of the central Balkan peninsula that found its deepest roots among Croatians, Serbians, Roma (Gypsies), and Hungarians and it reflects the deep soul, emotion and melancholy of these peoples. The group also plays music from other southern European countries including Greece, Bulgaria and Romania. Let Sviraj take you to another world!
